Obituary of Herman DeLosse French
Herman Delosse French
1931 – 2023
Herman French passed away peacefully at Harwood Manor in North Battleford at the age of 92 on December 5th, 2023. Herman was born in Kerrobert, SK on April 7th, 1931, to Herman and Delta French. Herman’s parents moved west from Ontario and hoped to farm in the Kerrobert, SK area. However, due to the “Dirty Thirties” they relocated to a homestead west of Penn, SK. Herman had four sisters and one brother. Herman had fond memories of riding horseback in the fields to check the cattle and helping pick berries to preserve for winter preparations. They always had lots of company because they lived beside the road and had a good well.
Herman attended school in a few places, beginning in the log schoolhouse not far from the homestead. Some of his high school subjects were taken by correspondence. He attended Normal School in Saskatoon for the 1951-52 school year. His first teaching job was at Shoal Lake, SK, arriving there in February in the back of a pick-up truck. He taught in several different schools, was a principal, and then a counselor. Herman then went back to university and got his Bachelor of Education. He went on to work in the administration side of education for a while.
Herman was part of the Anglican Church, but later joined the United Church. After retiring, Herman led a bible study group and helped with the services at the Spiritwood United Church, and then held services in Chitek Lake, SK, for approximately 14 years. During this time Herman was also the mayor of Chitek Lake for 6 years.
Herman married Frances Ruth Robinson on July 22, 1977. Most of those 46 years were spent living in Chitek Lake, where they had many family members and friends nearby. Roughly the last 10 years were spent living in North Battleford, SK. As Hermans heath declined he spent the last 2 years in a nursing home not far from our apartment. He took part in the activities as he was able, including the little church services led by the Catholic, Anglican, and United Churches. He also enjoyed going to the hymn sing at the Alliance Church. Near the end he talked about Heaven and was ready to meet the Lord his Maker.
Graveside service will be held at 2:15pm on Friday July 5th, 2024, at the Penn Cemetery, Penn, SK with the Celebration of Life to follow at 3:00pm in the Chitek Lake Community Hall, Chitek Lake, SK with Delores Beaulac officiating.
